Transformation:
old tobacco warehouse
old tobacco warehouse
[academic project: fall semester 2020-21] --Based on Vassilis Bogakos’ plans, the red tobacco warehouse in the Terpsithea area was built in 1963. It is a four-storey building with a bearing masonry that consists of red bricks and unpolished concrete. The building has to be restored and reused as a dormitory for the needs of the nearest university. Considering the building as an architectural monument, the main design idea aims at creating a conceptual dialogue between history and the future. While the masonry remains untouched, the lighting issue is being solved by removing parts of the roof and letting light get in vertically. By utilizing the basic bearing structure, a system of rooms and shared spaces are designed. Elevators, corridors, and escalators consist of an undivided system which serves vertical communication. This project redefines the concept of student dormitories as a complex system that adapts to contemporary needs.
